Delhi Metro Starts Green Roof Trials at Underground Stations

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has initiated pilot green roofs at three underground stations—Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, and Nehru Place. These living roofs, built above station entrances and vents, use native grass and succulent plants that absorb rainwater and reduce heat. The objective is to lower surface temperature and improve aesthetics. Initial readings show a 5°C reduction in ambient rooftop temperatures and better water absorption during showers. These roofs also reduce stormwater runoff, help in natural insulation, and improve urban biodiversity. Passengers have appreciated the visual change, and authorities aim to expand the model to 50 more stations over the next three years.
